Book Review:
The Great Divorce
By C.S. Lewis
Genre: Fiction/Fantasy
Lewis is by far one of the greatest story tellers of the 20th century. “The Chronicles of Narnia” have been an awesome encouragement to my life, and his book, “Mere Christianity” was a great tool in grounding my life in Christ.
The Great Divorce is another example of his great ability to capture the minds and emotion of his reader. This book was nothing that I expected. From all I had heard of it in the past, I expected a sort of theological discourse but instead was brought face to face with an anecdote of a man who experiences heaven and hell in a very trippy sort of way. This book challenges our current thoughts about the afterlife, partially by suggesting that perhaps in the end, those that end up in heaven will look back over their entire life, including earth and say that all of life had been heaven. The hardships will be seen simply as vessels for drawing us closer to God. And those that choose hell will find themselves looking back at the pleasures their sin brought them in their earthly life and realize that there was really no pleasure at all, rather just hell from the first day of their life.
The book can be summed up in the following quote from its pages: "There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, in the end, 'Thy will be done.'"
Though I’m sure that I didn’t understand half of the depth of this book I recommend it to anyone who wants an entertaining and challenging read.
